Deadbolt Locks: A Guide

The safety of your home is the best form of assurance that nothing bad will happen to your family, that your property will be safe and that your possessions and valuables are intact. There are so many home security equipment available in the market, stores and shops but what has been very predominant in the home is the front entrance door lock. Most homes are designed to have their main entrance with a front door and that is the primary area for entry of thieves and other people who have bad intentions.

They can forcibly open the front door, kick them, pick the locks and even knock them down. Deadbolt locks are therefore the first barrier against a forcible entry to your home. There are many locks that can be used in your home but the safest and most popular of them all is the dead bolt lock.  It is the cheaper alternative to more high tech security equipment.

A dead bolt lock is a type of lock that has a steel bolt that holds that door jamb and the door frame. It has a steel bolt that enters the door jamb and into the door frames strike plate. It has no handle and you need a key to open it from the outside but a sort of knob in the inside. The benefits of a dead bolt lock is that it is difficult to be picked even by experienced locksmiths, it provides strong support to your door and the steel lock will be difficult to cut and be forcibly broken because you may need to topple the whole door before you can have access to the bolt. There are different designs for a dead bolt and the best design is a double cylinder lock. For safety this is recommended but there are issues with this design because in case of emergency, it will be difficult to open from the outside unless the correct key is found. Therefore most safety officers recommend that the keys of double cylinder dead bolts are placed in areas where near the level of the floor because in case of fire, the cleanest air is at the floor level.

This problem is not encountered with single cylinder deadbolt door lockand therefore these are mostly used in fire exits. But the best protection is given by the double cylinder dead bolt locks. There are many other locks in the market but it is recommended that if a deadbolt lock is available, it is best to purchase and install them.
